    1. Friendly introduction to the dental office:

    • The dental team helps to create a welcoming environment for your child, using positive language to help them feel at ease.

    • The hygienist will take time to introduce themselves and show the child around the office and let them see and feel the dental tools on their hand to reduce any fear.

    2. Review of medical & dental history:

    • We will review your child’s medical history, diet, oral hygiene habits, and any dental concerns you might have noticed, such as thumb sucking or teething issues.

    3. Teeth cleaning (optional):

    • Depending on the child’s age and level of comfort, a dental hygienist may do a light cleaning, which includes removing any plaque, tartar, and surface stains.

    • If the child is very young (around 1-3 years), the hygienist may skip the cleaning and focus more on familiarizing them with the dental visit.

    4. Discussion with parents:

    • The dentist may or may not perform an intraoral exam on the child to check for cavities, spacing and development or any concerns you or the child may have.

    • The dentist and hygienist may give advice on caring for your child’s teeth at home, such as tips on brushing, flossing, and healthy eating habits for strong teeth.

    5. Possible x-rays (if needed):

    • Depending on the child’s age and dental development, the hygienist may take X-rays to get a clearer view of how the teeth are growing and check for any hidden issues, like cavities between teeth or problems with permanent teeth development.

    • X-rays are typically done for older children (around age 6 or above), unless there are concerns about tooth development.

    6. Fun elements to ease anxiety:

    • Our practice has a treasure box, which the kids are able to visit at the end of the appointment to help make the experience fun and memorable for the child.

    7. Setting the next appointment:

    • Our team will always set the next appointment for you!

    Overall focus:

    • The primary goal of the first visit is to make sure your child feels comfortable at the practice and to create a foundation for good dental habits. The hygienist will aim to keep the experience light, positive, and educational without overwhelming your child.

    • This recare interval is set by your hygienist.  Those with a healthy mouth (no bleeding) or those with mild gingivitis (localized, minimal bleeding) will typically be seen every 6 months.

    • Periodontal patients (those with gum measurements of > 4mm generalized) or patients with excessive bleeding will be set to 3-4 month intervals.

    • Generally, children visit the dental practice every 6 months, however, if the child is in orthodontics (braces) they should see the hygienist every 4 months to make sure they are maintaining the health of the gums and teeth.

  • What is a dental emergency?

Severe pain, uncontrolled bleeding, accidents that involve the jaw or mouth, or fractured teeth (especially in the esthetic zone).

Call our office number at 236-9375 and it will direct you.

    • By reducing the frequency of sugar, you can reduce your susceptibility to cavities.  This means if you choose to drink a soda, you should do it at mealtime and not sip on it all day.

    • Using interdental products such as dental floss, floss picks, soft picks, earth picks or a waterpik every 24 hours (most effective if used before bedtime) you can significantly reduce your risk of cavities.

    • Making sure you brush your teeth with a fluoridated toothpaste at least twice a day for 2 minutes each time and making sure you reach the gumline.

    • Making sure you stay hydrated!  Salivary flow can affect your susceptibility.  Poor salivary flow can decrease the pH in your mouth and inhibit food from being washed away from the teeth.  If this is a concern, please speak to your hygienist about other options to help with salivary flow.

  • There are several options for replacing missing teeth, including dental implants, bridges, and dentures (retained by natural teeth or implants). Your dentist will discuss the best option for your specific needs and situation.
