Comprehensive Oral Exam

  • What is it?

A Comprehensive Oral Exam (COE) is a thorough evaluation of all oral and related structures, forming the foundation for routine dental check-ups. It can even reveal underlying health conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, or oral cancer before other symptoms appear.

All new patients and existing patients every 5 years after age 18 will receive a COE. It’s also required for those absent for over 3 years or with significant medical changes.

Routine exams (recare/check-ups) are follow-ups for existing patients, typically done once or twice a year to monitor changes since the last full evaluation.

Together, the COE helps us build a long-term strategy for your oral and overall health.

  • What is Involved?

I1. Medical and Dental History Review

Discussion of your overall health, medications, and any conditions that may affect dental treatment (e.g., diabetes, heart disease).

Past dental procedures, habits, and concerns.

    2. Extraoral Exam

Evaluation of your head, neck, jaw joints (TMJ), and lymph nodes for abnormalities or signs of systemic issues.

    3. Intraoral Soft Tissue Exam

Inspection of cheeks, tongue, floor and roof of the mouth, throat, and gums.

Oral cancer screening is part of this - we look at the tissues in the mouth and throat and

    4. Periodontal (Gum) Assessment

(This stage is in depth with the first hygiene appointment)

Measurement of gum pockets to assess gum health and check for signs of periodontal disease (bone loss, inflammation, recession).

    5. Dental Charting

Recording of existing fillings, crowns, bridges, implants, and missing or damaged teeth.

    6. Occlusion (Bite) Analysis

Check how your teeth come together to identify grinding, clenching, or bite issues.

    7. Radiographs (X-rays)

Full-mouth or panoramic X-rays to detect cavities, bone loss, infections, cysts, impacted teeth, and more.

    8. Intraoral Photos (if applicable)

Photos of teeth for documentation and patient education.

    9. Risk Assessment

Evaluation of risk factors for cavities, gum disease, oral cancer, and other conditions.

    10. Treatment Planning

Personalized discussion of findings, recommendations, and options for care.

  • Why is it Important?

In short, a COE is preventive, proactive, and personalized—an essential step in maintaining both a healthy smile and a healthy body.

    🦷 1. Detects Issues Early

Identifies problems like tooth decay, gum disease, infections, and oral cancer in their earliest stages—before they become painful or expensive to treat.

🦷 2. Links Oral Health to Overall Health

The mouth is often a window to your general health. Conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, immune disorders, and even cancer can show signs in the mouth first.

    🦷 3. Customizes Long-Term Care

A COE helps the dentist understand your unique dental needs and create a personalized treatment plan that supports both immediate and future health goals.

    🦷 4. Establishes a Baseline

It creates a detailed record of your oral condition today, which helps track changes over time and measure the success of future treatments.

🦷 5. Especially Critical for New Patients or Those with Health Changes

New patients, people returning after years, or those with major medical changes benefit from a fresh, in-depth assessment.
